Making a fresh start after divorce

Divorce can be a confusing and lonely experience.

Yet when approached in the right way, the process offers a valuable opportunity to take control of your life.

One of the most crucial issues to think about is your financial settlement, which often involves making some difficult choices. That’s why it’s usually a good idea to seek professional advice you can trust to help create a secure financial future for yourself and your family. Often, this advice comes from a dedicated financial planner.

Getting to know Sharon

I was recently contacted by Sharon, an existing client who was going through a divorce. Although her husband Patrick had mainly dealt with Dalton Steiner in the past, Sharon was keen to continue her relationship with our firm.

She didn’t want to deal with anyone else at such an uncertain time in her life.

From the start, Sharon indicated that she would be more comfortable working with a woman. I invited her to our offices so she could find out a bit more about us, which I thought would help to put her mind at ease during this particularly difficult period. Together with an in-house financial planner, we had a meeting and talked about her concerns, reassuring her that we would work together to look after her best interests during the divorce process and beyond.

Going at their pace

In these types of situations, it’s important to work out which assets can be divided as part of your settlement, including insurance policies, pensions, investments and property. I know the divorce process can seem daunting, we aim to remove as much stress as possible by giving our clients a better understanding of their financial positions.

In Sharon and Patrick’s case, Sharon's financial planner and I worked alongside their existing Dalton Steiner investment manager, Simon Martin, to ensure we remained sensitive to both their needs.

Our main aim was to make them feel secure in the knowledge that we would handle their assets separately, but also be able to consider the needs of the family and prioritise their children’s wellbeing.

Her financial planner and I worked as part of a team for Sharon alongside her solicitor to ensure the process was as smooth and amicable as possible.

At a time when money was probably the least of her worries, I was able to help her create an investment plan that could help give her financial security today and well into the future.
